A manuscript evaluation provides the same big-picture guidance as a Story Edit, without direct comments inside the manuscript.

This service offers a comprehensive review of your story’s structure, pacing, character development, and overall effectiveness. Instead of margin comments, feedback is delivered through a detailed editorial letter that highlights strengths, identifies opportunities for improvement, and offers clear direction for revision.

Manuscript Evaluation is ideal for writers who want professional insight into what is working, what may need adjustment, and where to focus their revision efforts before moving into deeper editing.

What Manuscript Evaluation Assesses

This review examines how well your manuscript functions as a complete story and whether the core elements are supporting the reader experience you want to create.

Key areas evaluated include:

Story Structure & Plot

  • does the narrative follow a clear and engaging arc?
  • does the beginning establish the right expectations?
  • does the pacing maintain reader interest?
  • do major turning points occur at effective moments?

Character Development

  • does the protagonist have a clear motivation and goal?
  • do character decisions feel believable?
  • does the emotional journey evolve in a meaningful way?
  • do supporting characters serve the story?

Conflict & Stakes

  • are the stakes clear and compelling?
  • does tension build naturally throughout the manuscript?
  • does the story escalate appropriately?

Genre Expectations

  • does the manuscript deliver on genre expectations?
  • does the story fulfill the promise made to the reader?
  • are story conventions used intentionally?

Clarity & Cohesion

  • are there plot gaps or inconsistencies?
  • are ideas introduced clearly and carried through the story?
  • does the narrative remain internally consistent?

What You Will Receive

Your Manuscript Evaluation includes a detailed editorial (approximately 20–40 pages) letter designed to guide your next revision:

  • a comprehensive editorial letter outlining strengths and opportunities for improvement
  • specific suggestions for strengthening plot, pacing, and character arcs
  • identification of potential plot gaps or inconsistencies
  • recommendations for improving clarity and reader engagement
  • guidance on aligning the story with genre expectations
  • clear direction for next revision steps
